What is Toastmasters International?
Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs.
The mission of every Toastmasters club is to provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.
How do Toastmasters meetings work?
Every Toastmasters meeting consists of three primary segments.
Before each meeting, certain members prepare presentations in advance. During the meeting, they deliver their speech in five to seven minutes.
Immediate, constructive feedback is essential to our growth. All prepared speeches receive verbal evaluations during the meeting.
Each meeting, several members practice their impromptu speaking skills by responding to surprise questions prepared by the Topicsmaster.
How can I get involved during meetings?
As Toastmasters, we all improve our communication skills through experience and practice. Therefore, a goal in every meeting is to get as many members involved as possible. To accomplish this goal, we provide many ways to participate in every meeting, both big and small.
Each speaker prepares and presents a speech based on a project assignment.
Each evaluator observes a presentation, then completes a brief written and oral evaluation.
The Toastmaster hosts the meeting, introduces speakers, and keeps the meeting moving.
The General Evaluator observes everything and gives feedback to improve future meetings.
The Topicsmaster prepares and hosts the Table Topics segment of the meeting.
The grammarian helps members improve their language skills and vocabularies.
The Ah-Counter helps speakers eliminate the use of filler words, such as ah, um, and so.
The timer helps keep the meeting on schedule by timing each person who speaks.
Many clubs offer unique roles, such as the body language monitor, humorist, or word master.
As you can see, everyone has the opportunity to get involved at each meeting! In addition, by arriving a few minutes early or staying a few minutes after, you have the opportunity to connect with different members on a personal level.
How much does it cost?
Being a Toastmaster is an affordable, high-value professional development opportunity. While many workshops and programs cost $500 to $1,500 for just a few hours or days, it only costs about $10 per month to be a Toastmaster. Here is a detailed breakdown.
New Member Fee
All new members pay a one-time fee of $20 to Toastmasters International. This gets your account established and provides you with access to the online educational program.
Every 6 months, all members pay dues of $45 to Toastmasters International to maintain active membership in the organization. Hence, the total annual cost is $90.
Individual clubs may charge dues to fund day-to-day operations, such as space rental, printing costs, and purchasing awards to recognize members. Club dues vary from $0-120 per year.
How do I join?
Once you're ready to join, complete a membership application and provide it to the designated officer at your club. Be sure to put a valid email address on your application, since this will be used for logging into your account on the official Toastmasters International website.
